Freeware Pick: Fish Fly is a Cute and Colorful Aquatic Shooter

Fish Fly, described as a "cute-em-up" from developers Melon Journey and Neptune, is a free game downloadable for Windows and Mac on itch.io.

In it, you're a cute fish thing whose job it is to collect crystals from Planet Overling's oceans by capturing various aquatic wildlife with your tail bubbles. The game combines super colorful levels, characters, and abilities with pleasing sound effects to create an experience that just feels really satisfying to play.

It controls simply: all you need to do is press the left or right arrow keys to turn the infinitely-swimming player creature around. Some of the aquatic animals you can expect to run into include: other fish, sea mushrooms, anemone, water rabbits, plankton, eggs, and ghost bears. (Not official names...)

Waves of enemies keep coming until you collect a certain amount of gems, which are dropped by creatures you manage to "shoot" with the stream of bubbles firing out of your fins. Special crystals grant you abilities, like changing your "bullets" so that they have a longer or wider range. Some just make you really big, but the effects are always temporary.

For high score chasers, there's "Night Mode," which is a faster and more difficult version of the normal "Fish Mode." Even if you're not looking for a challenge, the game is distinct enough in its visuals and sound design that you should definitely give it a shot.

You can download Fish Fly on itch.io. It's free with an option for paying what you want.
